FAQ's

Terminology:

Single Turned

These bowls have been turned from 'Green' wood to a thin wall thickness and is then left to air dry. As it dries it will change shape and naturally 'settle' into its own unique shape.

Twice Turned

These bowls have been turned from 'Green' wood to a thick wall thickness and are then left to air dry. Once dry they are re-turned to take the unique 'warp' out, creating a more uniform shape.

Spalting

Spalting is a form of fungal infection commonly found in dead trees, although spalting can occur in living trees. The fungal infection can cause unique colouration and patterns.

Quilted

Quilt or quilted timber refers to a type of figure in wood. It is seen on the tangential plane (flat-sawn) and looks like a wavy "quilted" pattern, often similar to ripples on water. It is a distortion of the grain pattern itself.

Quarter Sawn

Quarter sawn lumber is defined as wood where the annular growth rings intersect the face of the board at a 60 to 90 degree angle. When cutting this lumber at the sawmill, each log is sawed at a radial angle into four quarters, hence the name.

Burl's

Burls (also known as bur or burr's) are a growth on a tree where the grain has grown in a deformed manner. Often found as a rounded growth on a trees trunk or branch filled with small knots.

Mineral oil is a liquid by-product of refining crude oil to make gasoline and other petroleum products. This type of mineral oil is a transparent, colorless oil, composed mainly of alkanes. After use wipe clean with soap and water and dry after washing. Tung oil is a drying oil obtained by pressing the seed from the nut of the tung tree. Tung oil hardens upon exposure to air, and the resulting coating is transparent and has a deep, almost wet look. Tung oil is a hard wearing finish and should require minimal after care. additional coats of Tung Oil can be applied or natural beeswax can be applied over the top.
Danish oil is a finishing oil, often made of tung oil. It provides a hard-wearing and water-resistant satin finish. Wipe clean with soap and water and dry immediately after washing. To maintain or bring back finish then buff on new Danish Oil and wipe off any access.

Sustainability:

Product Manufacture

From beginning any project, my thoughts are focused on the origins of the materials i use. I try to create as little waste as possible while creating the smallest carbon footprint.
All non toxic shavings are donated to a local independent farms and used as live stock bedding. Larger offcuts are used in smaller projects, or used to warm the workshop on the fire.
Most materials used are sourced as locally as possible, reducing the materials carbon footprint in terms of distance travelled.

Packaging

All packaging materials are considered in terms of environmental impact. All packaging materials used are 100% recyclable, including the tape! The card filling material can also be composted and is made from 100% recycled material.
